8th Grade News - 4/13

Memory -

“Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.”

Math -

This past week Math 2 has been studying Chapter 7, “Surface Area & Volume”.  We have focused on naming 3-D solids and finding surface area. Next week we will continue to work with surface area and look into volume.  Pre-Algebra has begun Chapter 10 “Area & Volume”. Next week Pre-Algebra will focus on surface area. Algebra has just begun to study Chapter 11, “Radical Expressions & Equations”.


Reading -

Reading 2 has begun reading Lois Lowry’s The Giver.  They will look at this “utopian” society, comparing it to the fallen world that we live in.  Students should be doing the assigned readings every night as well as preparing for short answer type quizzes.  Reading 3 has begun reading The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.  We will look at WWII as a whole and talk about the impact literature can have in regards to painting a picture of what life was like.


English -

Students will be performing a demonstration speech next week.  Through expository writing, they will put together an explanation of a complex process and present or demonstrate how this process works.  Presentations will take place at the end of next week.


Holocaust Museum -

On Thursday, 8th grade will be taking a field trip to the Holocaust Museum.  The fee to the museum, as well as their Ventra cards, (We have to use public transportation to get there.) have already been paid for.  I am still working on figuring out the best lunch situation. A permission slip and details about lunch will go home on Monday.

Math -

All math classes need to make sure to have all missing assignments, corrections, and signed tests into Mrs. Runge by Thursday, March 29.   Algebra will wrap up their study Chapter 10, “Quadratic Equations & Functions” and will take a test on Wednesday, March 28.

 

Religion -

Next week will be watching “The Passion of the Christ”.  Please see the permission slip that went home yesterday.

  

Art -

Please send in at least one favorite empty cereal box for an upcoming art project.

All service hours and any missing work is due by Thursday, March 29.


Auction -

Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted.  But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.     Isaiah 53:4-5


Math -

Math 2 will be wrapping up their unit study of Chapter 6, “Geometry”.  They will take on test on Thursday. Pre-Algebra will spend the early part of the week working on a Transformation Project.  The project guidelines went home today. They will take a test on Friday, March 23 on Chapter 9, “Spatial Thinking”. Algebra will continue to study Chapter 10, “Quadratic Equations & Functions”.  

 

Reading -

Reading 2 recently began a unit on Poetry.  During this unit they will learn how to analyze and appreciate poetry.  Afterward, they will create a tournament of poems for our annual “Poetry Madness” competition.  During this time they pit poem against poem to come up with their favorite which will win the tournament, much like the March Madness college basketball tournament going on right now.

Math -

Pi Day is on Wednesday, March 14 (3.14).  Each math class is encouraged to bring in a circular treat to share with their class.  All math that day will be related to circles. Math 2 will really focus on circles for the early part of the week.  Then they will transition into Pre-Algebra will wrap up their study of Chapter 9, “Spatial Thinking”. They will spend the week working on transformations.  Algebra will have a test on Monday over Chapter 9, “Polynomials & Factoring”. They will then begin Chapter 10, “Quadratic Equations & Functions”.


Social Studies -

Constitution Study Guides went home on Wednesday of this past week.  In class, we went over ALL of the answers for the test. The students are expected to just STUDY, STUDY, STUDY for the next several days.  On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, class time will be spent playing review games to prepare for the test.


Art -

Coffee House -

Next Friday afternoon, the High School Prep will be hosting their monthly Coffee House to approach real-life situations from a Christian perspective,  Students are able to bring a drink of their choice to enjoy!

The Lord’s Prayer - Close

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.  Amen.  What does this mean?  This means that I should be certain that these petitions are pleasing to our Father in heaven, and are heard by Him; for He Himself has commanded us to pray in this way and has promised to hear us.  Amen, amen, means “yes, yes, it shall be so.”  


Math -

Math 2 will continue to study Chapter 6, “Geometry”.  Pre-Algebra will continue their next unit of study will be Chapter 9, “Spatial Thinking”. Algebra will continue to practice the concepts from Chapter 9, “Polynomials & Factoring”.


Social Studies -

In Social Studies, 8th grade will finish studying the Illinois Constitution and the United States Flag.  On Thursday, each student will receive their study guide for the Constitution Test.


English -

Next week, 8th grade has speeches.  Speeches will be Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.  However, everyone needs to be ready to give their speech on Monday.


Art -
