8th Grade News - 10/13

Memory -

“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.  Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Matthew 5:11-12


8th Commandment - You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.  What does this mean?  We should fear and love God so that we do not tell lies about our neighbor, betray him, slander him, or hurt his reputation, but defend him, speak well of him, and explain everything in the kindest way.


Math -

zAÃ Math 2 will continue their study of  “Integers & Rational Numbers”.   Pre-Algebra will continue studying Chapter 3, “Decimals & Equations”.  They will take a test over Chapter 3 on Friday.  Algebra will wrap up their unit on  Chapter 3, “Solving Equations” with a test on Wednesday.  They will then begin to study Chapter 4, “Solving Inequalities”.  

Social Studies -

Over the weekend, 8th grade will finish working on a group project for “The Progressive Era”.  They are to put together an artifact bag for one of the people they have been studying.  Throughout the rest of the week, the 8th grade will study Chapter 4, “Becoming a World Power”.


English -

8th grade will be continuing their work with the 6-Traits--specifically the Ideas, Organization, and Conventions Traits. They will be identifying these specific traits in a short essay that they have written.   

Reading -

Reading 2 will be moving from their Wednesday Wars novel to a short story unit in their textbooks, dealing with historical comparisons. Reading 4 will be finishing up Shakespeare's Hamlet and doing a book project on it that deals heavily with symbolism and relationships in the novel.  


Religion -

The 8th grade will continue to study a unit on “Martin Luther & the Reformation”.  This year is the 500 year anniversary of the Reformation - It’s Still All About Jesus.

 

Trivia Night -

It is finally here - SATURDAY!  I will see all of you at 4:30 pm (or as close to it as possible).  I hope you are ready for a night of fun & fellowship as you work with each other to raise funds for the class trip.

Memory -

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

7th Commandment - You shall not steal.  What does this mean?  We should fear and love God so that we do not take our neighbor’s money or possessions, or get them in any dishonest way, but help him to improve and protect his possessions and income.  


Math -

Math 2 will continue their study of  “Integers & Rational Numbers”.   Pre-Algebra will start a new unit next week.  They will be studying Chapter 3, “Decimals & Equations”.  Algebra will continue to work on  Chapter 3, “Solving Equations”.

Social Studies -

The 8th grade class will begin a new unit next week, “The Progressive Era”.


English -

8th grade will begin working on a review of the 6-traits in the coming weeks.  They will look at the Ideas, Organization, and Sentence Fluency Traits before moving on to their next in-class essay.  

Reading -

Reading 2 has  now finished their novel "The Wednesday Wars" and will begin working on their final project.  Details will go home this coming week.


Religion -

Over the next couple of weeks, the 8th grade will study a unit on “Martin Luther & the Reformation”.  This year is the 500 year anniversary of the Reformation - It’s Still All About Jesus.  When this unit is over, the study on “The Public Ministry of Jesus” will continue.

 

Trivia Night -

Next Saturday is Trivia Night (10/14).  There is still time to get a table turned in - please do so by 10/11.

Memory -

“But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’  Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” Mark 10:6-8a


6th Commandment - You shall not commit adultery.  What does this mean?  We should fear and love God so that we lead a sexually pure and decent life in what we say and do, and husband and wife love and honor each other.


Math -

Math 2 will begin a new unit of study next week.  They will study “Integers & Rational Numbers”.   Pre-Algebra will wrap up their study the unit  “One-Step Equations & Inequalities.”  There will be a test on Thursday.  Algebra will continue to work on  Chapter 3, “Solving Equations”.

Social Studies -

During the study of “The Industrial Revolutions”, the class talked about the develop of mass culture.  Each 8th grader picked a certain mass culture item to research and present.  On Tuesday, the class will take a test on Chapter 2.  


Religion -

8th grade will start a unit study on “The Public Ministry of Christ”.  


Reading -

Reading 2 will continue their study of the novel Wednesday Wars.  They will complete it this week and begin working on a culminating project.  Reading 3 will be starting a short unit in their textbooks.  This unit delves into both internal and external conflict.


Trivia Night -

Trivia Night is Saturday, October 14.  Please get together a table or two of your family and friends.  The more tables we have sold, the better the profit for the class.  Tables are due to the office by October 7.  It is a great night of fun and fellowship!

Memory -

“The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.” Luke 9:22

 

5th Commandment - You shall not murder,  What does this mean?  We should fear and love God so that we do not hurt or harm our neighbor in his body, but help and support him in every physical need.

 

Math -

Math 2 will spend next week comparing and converting fractions and decimals.  They will also continue to review operations with both fractions and decimals.  Pre-Algebra will continue to study a unit on “One-Step Equations & Inequalities.”  Algebra will wrap up their study on “Rational Numbers” with a unit test on Tuesday.  For the remainder of the week, they will work on Chapter 3, “Solving Equations”.

Social Studies -

The next unit of study for social studies is Chapter 2, “Industrialization & Immigration”.  This weekend 8th grade should research how at least one family immigrated to the United States and write a paragraph on it.

 

Reading -

Reading 2 will continue their study of the novel Wednesday Wars.  Each chapter covers one month in the life of a student in 1960's New York.  After each chapter there will be a comprehension quiz, and after every three chapters there will be a test.  Consider discussing the themes of this novel with your student and how they are doing with the reading and comprehension.  In Reading 3 this coming week is the last for Literature Circles.  Projects are due to be presented in class on Friday, 9-29.

 

Religion -

This past week we concluded our study on “The Childhood of Jesus”.  Next week we will watch ‘The Nativity Story”.  Class discussion will be spent comparing the Bible to how Hollywood portrays the story.

 

Trivia Night -

8th Grade News - 9/15

Memory -

4th Commandment - Honor your father and your mother?  What does this mean?  We should fear and love God so that we do not despise or anger our parents and other authorities, but honor them, serve and obey them, love and cherish them.


Math -

For the second part of this past week, Math 2 has studied place value and operations with decimals. Next week, they will continue to review operations with decimals.  At the end of the week, they will take a quiz over these concepts.  Pre-Algebra will take a test on Tuesday on the unit they have been studying “Algebraic Expressions & Integers”.  For the rest of the next week, they will study “One-Step Equations & Inequalities.”  Algebra has begun to study a unit on “Rational Numbers”.

Social Studies -

The next unit of study for social studies is Chapter 2, “Industrialization & Immigration”.


English -

8th grade will be studying the 8 chief parts of speech over the next couple of weeks.

8th Grade Parent Meeting -

On Thursday night at 6:30 pm in the 8th grade classroom, there will be a parent meeting.  There will be a time for any questions about the beginning of the school year and then a majority of our time will be spent on high school discussion and fundraising for the year.  It would be wonderful to have everyone there to make this the best possible school year for your children!

 

Trivia Night -

Trivia Night is Saturday, October 14.  An email went home last week with a flyer attached.  A hard copy of that same flyer is in this week’s Friday Folder.  Please get together a table or two of your family and friends.  The more tables we have sold, the better the profit for the class.  It is a great night of fun and fellowship!  More details at Thursday night’s meeting,
