Water lead test - July 2017

July 26, 2017

St. John’s Lutheran School Chicago, IL 60641
Dear St. John’s Lutheran School Community:
Our school is committed to protecting student, teacher, and staff health. To protect our community, St. John’s Lutheran School tests our schools’ drinking water for lead. Our test results were received July 26, 2017.
Why Test School Drinking Water for Lead? High levels of lead in drinking water can cause health problems. Lead is most dangerous for pregnant women, infants, and children under 6 years old. Exposure to high levels of lead during pregnancy contributes to low birth weight and developmental delays in infants. In young children, lead exposure can lower IQ levels, affect hearing, reduce attention span, and hurt school performance. At very high levels, lead can even cause brain damage.
To protect public health, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suggests that schools and day care facilities test their drinking water for lead. If lead is found at any water outlet at levels above 20 micrograms per Liter (µg/L), EPA recommends taking action to reduce the lead. However the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) as mandated by Public Act 99-0922 requires taking action to reduce the lead at 5 µg/L and requires posting on our web page above 2 µg/L.
Is Our School’s Drinking Water Safe? Yes, our school’s water is safe. St. John’s Lutheran School tested our drinking water for lead. Of the 108 water samples we tested, only 17 showed lead levels above the 5 µg/L mark. In other words, 91% of the water outlets tested did not have any lead problems.
The outlets with high lead levels were the kitchen sinks. The initial test was over 5 µg/L when they were first turned on but went down to zero µg/L after running the water for 30 seconds. The bathroom sinks by the Fellowship Room and on the second floor showed initial levels of 2.15 µg/L through 5.98 µg/L and zero µg/L after 30 seconds. However the gym kitchen coffee urn continued to have readings above 5 µg/L and will be disconnected.

  1. The immediate remedy suggested by the EPA for these sinks is to have the custodian run each of these faucets for one minute before school starts which, since after 30 seconds the reading goes down to 0 µg/L.
  2. The EPA also recommends replacing the aerators which do collect mineral deposits and have signs posted at these locations to not drink from the sink.
  3. And the EPA recommends a review and inventory of water pipes to determine if pipes are part of the issue and need to be replaced.
The drinking fountain by second grade was 5.14 µg/L when it was first turned on but went down to zero µg/L after running the fountain for 30 seconds. This fountain will be removed and replaced with a filtered fountain.
The Good News is that all the locations not listed have been tested and lead was Not Detected.
